The Wells Building

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

This once underutilized building is in fact the most important physical hub for communications traffic in southeastern Wisconsin. Today all regional internet traffic travels through the Wells Building, just as the first telegraphs did in 1902. The new owners envisioned offering modern office spaces with immeasurable data speeds to capture the high-tech market, while maintaining the dramatic historic architecture.

Engberg Anderson was hired to assist with the ongoing transformation of the building. New office suites offer creative and collaborative work environments with abundant natural light. The loft aesthetic of the suites harmonizes with the historic details without mimicking them, restoring high ceilings while adding state of the art building systems. The building is home to several data centers, corporate clients, and ground-level retailers.
