Rockford Public Library
The new Rockford Public Library is a state-of-the-art facility that came as the result of a Strategic Facility Plan that Engberg Anderson performed for the Library. Part of that planning was a community engagement process that clearly identified the importance of public connections to the City’s namesake river and the creation of a facility that embodied the aspirations of the community as well as the cultural significance of the Library in defining opportunities for area residents.
The result is a high quality, gorgeous space that invites people in with four terraces, an attached programming venue with room for up to 180 people, and three-story gallery space which brings in museum quality traveling exhibits for the library’s patrons to experience. Areas of focus include a marketplace, interactive youth services, a maker lab and studios, a teen zone, quiet reading rooms, a local history and archive, and an outdoor play space. Additionally, the library enhanced use of the makerspace to promote developing the skillsets of the local workforce to support area businesses.
