In collaboration with Milwaukee developer Royal Capital, Engberg Anderson served as the lead architect in the restoration and adaptive reuse of the former Schuster’s/Gimbel’s department store in Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Spanning an entire city block, this expansive building has transformed to accommodate diverse functions. The revitalized structure contains family-supporting housing, a five-star rated early childhood education facility, a Versiti Blood Center, the offices of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and research departments of the Medical College of Wisconsin. Additionally, various spaces are designed to serve the local community residents, contributing to the growth and vitality of the area, including multiple food vendors, a maker space, a free business support center, meeting spaces of many sizes and an open and flexible public hall/forum designed to host public and private events. A new parking structure also supports the office and public spaces as well as provide parking for a new nearby charter high school. This ambitious project has breathed new life, created jobs, and rejuvenated the street front in this burgeoning and crucial neighborhood.
