Historic Garfield Apartments + The Griot
This project has been catalytic for the Milwaukee neighborhood of Bronzeville. The Historic Garfield School redevelopment transformed a vacant city block into a vibrant mixed-use campus.
The two-phase development started with the renovation of the existing historic school into 30-units of affordable housing, Historic Garfield Apartments. The second phase included demolishing existing buildings on the adjoining property. After that, the team constructed a new housing development, The Griot. The Griot offers 40-units of housing, amenities, and 8,000 sf of commercial space. As a true community project, the Griot is the new home for America’s Black Holocaust Museum. The project is a showcase of the commitment of the city, the community, and the development team to better the Bronzeville neighborhood.
