Historic Third Ward Riverwalk
Imagery and materials interpret the area’s industrial heritage and emphasize environmental education in this half-mile long extension of the Milwaukee Riverwalk into the Historic Third Ward. Engberg Anderson collaborated with New York artist Mary Miss in the conceptual design and further refined the design working with a team of landscape architects, lighting designers, structural and civil engineers. Ironwood planking, metal railings and landscape elements lead users over the water between overlook areas. “Moon” lighting provides a glare-free ambient lighting and is complemented with with a variety of lights that reflect on the water. Sustainable design elements include using sustainable wood products for the boardwalk areas, natural plantings and storm water reclamation demonstration as the focus of urban watershed education center.
