Wishing to consolidate operations into a single facility in downtown Tucson, MEB purchased this 2-story former retail/residential property on historic Congress Street. Engberg Anderson transformed the neglected building with visible deferred maintenance and multiple code violations into a colorful, contemporary open-office environment while featuring the building’s historic elements – high ceilings, hardwood floors, heavy timber structure and masonry walls. Accessibility, comfort and safety were improved through the insertion of new stairs, elimination of multiple floor levels, and all new mechanical and electrical systems. The seemingly whimsical incorporation of a vertical lift glass garage door in the main conference room allows for increased meeting capacity when opened.
