State Archive Preservation Facility

Madison, Wisconsin

This new 189,730 sf facility houses collections for the Wisconsin State Historical Society, the Wisconsin Veteran’s Museum, and other state agencies in a multi-zoned, specialized, controlled environment to protect and preserve library materials, archive materials, and museum artifacts. The high-performance building envelope and specialized mechanical system provide multiple zoned temperature and humidity controls to meet the preservation environmental conditions unique to the diverse collection needs. The design focuses on collections, from the layout of the flow of materials through delivery, decontamination, conservation, and cataloging to their final home within the appropriate shelving environment. Alongside the collections, spaces are provided for staff and collections access by researchers and other authorized parties. Engberg Anderson and SmithGroup collaborated on the design of this facility.
