Fitchburg Public Library

Located within a growing civic campus, the 39,000 sf library is the first public library to serve the City of Fitchburg. The Fitchburg Public Library is the newest addition to the campus established in 1997 to knit together a diverse community of agricultural, rural and suburban areas. As the bridge between the City Hall on the hill and the commercial and residential developments across the street, the Library is located at the crossroads of this evolving community. The library balances current service trends with the flexibility to adapt as requirements evolve.

Interior sustainable features were designed to be integrated into the building and library operations. The windows have been located based on the building orientation to allow maximum daylight but minimize glare and heat gain. Sun controls and a dimmable lighting system have been incorporated to protect users from glare issues and increase energy efficiency. In addition the library uses radiant floor heating to increase use comfort and reduce energy consumption. Careful consideration was given to minimizing the operational costs of this public facility through the incorporation of sustainable energy solutions.
